LAYOFF HAS HU'S AUGHTRY HUNGRY TO HIT

Hampton University's Stanley Aughtry lives for the big hit.

What he loves most is hearing that "screechy sound" he says quarterbacks make when he delivers a perfectly timed blow on a blitz. It's a sound that has been missing from Aughtry's life for a year, since he broke his right ankle in the season-opener against New Hampshire.

Saturday, when the Pirates open their season at New Hampshire, Aughtry will be back at outside linebacker for the first time since sustaining the injury. The game is so important to Aughtry, a fifth-year senior from Windsor, N.C., that his teammates have dedicated it to him.

"This will hopefully be one of the biggest games of my career," he said. "I'm not seeking personal revenge against anyone. But I've got extra incentive. I've got two years of ammunition that I've got to unload in just one season."
